In 2018 the University of Oxford’s iconic Iffley Road Sports Complex – made famous as the site of Sir Roger Bannister’s four minute mile – officially opened its new state-of-the-art facilities as part of its ambitious transformation scheme. The 9m centre, named after Olympic rower Acer Nethercott, features the UK’s first LED lit, glass sports hall surface.

In preparation for Phase 1 opening, Oxford University Sport (OUS) commissioned Maynard to carry out a wayfinding study for the Iffley Road sports complex and to produce a wayfinding strategy and design that would meet the requirements of existing and future visitors including students and the general public.

The design of the signage, whilst giving a ‘nod’ to the existing University of Oxford’s Sign Design Guidelines needed to provide a greater emphasis on OUS’s individual identity and objective of creating an exciting and inspiring environment for Iffley Road visitors.
