Surrey Legible City

Maynard, in partnership with Atkins, were commissioned by Surrey County Council to undertake a wayfinding strategy for Guildford, Redhill and Woking. Maynard developed a strong visual system in the form of a product family, mapping style and graphic layout for each sign.

The objective was to produce a unified wayfinding sign system, placement strategy and implementation plan that would work across all three towns yet express the individuality of each location. The visual system reflects the heritage and aspiration of Surrey, using a colour palette, typeface and material selection that represents the traditional essence of the county. A bespoke pictogram family and illustrative building style has also been introduced to the graphic language of the sign system.

To reflect the individuality and character of each town the product uses two main materials: one for the standard sign face panel and the other for the kick base and side panel, which changes from town to town, bringing a bespoke element to the product family.

To bring the Surrey Wayfinding system to life, we went beyond drawings and specifications, exploring full-scale mock-ups, hands-on prototyping, and material trials to refine both form and function. This iterative process allowed us to push the design vision further, ensuring each sign not only met technical requirements but also expressed the individuality of Guildford, Redhill, and Woking.
