Circular Quay Renewal Wayfinding

Transport for NSW have embarked on the renewal and revitalisation of Circular Quay, one of Australia’s most iconic and significant destinations.

A modular street furniture system for a dynamic and flexible city

As the gateway to Sydney Harbour and one of the country’s most visited attractions, Circular Quay is also a complex multimodal transport interchange serving Ferries, Trains, Light Rail and Buses.

Maynard, in collaboration with Tzannes Architects, Weston Williamson + Partners and Aspect Studios developed a holistic wayfinding solution that integrates both Transport for NSW (TfNSW) signage and a bespoke family of precinct signage products. The wayfinding system supports the project vision of an open, welcoming and highly-connected precinct, providing a world-class experience for both visitors and transport customers.

Services included the development of a comprehensive multi-modal wayfinding strategy covering trains, ferries, buses, light rail, and active transport. This involved creating a precinct-wide signage system tailored to visitor and customer needs, informed by user personas from a Maynard-led Visitor and Customer Experience (VCX) workstream.

The scope also included designing a bespoke signage family for the public realm, wayfinding for a renovated train station and facilities, signage for six new ferry wharves (four public, two private), and a full VCX strategy with internal validation and external user testing.
