TfNSW Wayfinding Guidelines

In 2013, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) undertook a once in a generation refresh of the public transport wayfinding system that aligned to the organisation’s vision of delivering an integrated multi-modal customer experience.

Developing a unified guideline to enhance usability, consistency and functionality

Over the past decade, Maynard have worked closely with TfNSW to developed and iterated a large number of wayfinding and graphic guideline documents, supporting various programs in order to create a consistent and unified transport system.

One such project was an ongoing challenge for the TfNSW team that lay in the management, updating, and distribution of these variously formatted guideline documents.

Maynard worked with the design team at TfNSW to create a single, unified ‘Wayfinding Graphic and Content Rules Guideline’. The process involved close collaboration with TfNSW to streamline content, update graphics for consistency, and remove unnecessary repetition of information.

Delivering a new digital typeface to be implemented on customer information digital displays across the TfNSW public transport network.

This project aimed to deliver a new typeface for customer information digital displays across the TfNSW public transport network, ensuring the best possible customer experience while meeting the functional requirements of a digital wayfinding font.

Key objectives included simplifying typeface licensing and establishing a cost-effective legal model for long-term use. The new typeface had to maintain visual compatibility with the existing Frank New typeface, which has received positive feedback, to ensure consistency across both static and digital signage—particularly in environments where the two coexist, such as Town Hall Station.

Additionally, technical simplicity was essential to guarantee legibility and reliable character rendering across diverse digital screens and assets.

Supporting accessible travel across Sydney’s iconic harbour

The Ferry Wharf Upgrade Program is a major initiative by the NSW Government aimed at modernising and improving ferry wharves across Sydney to provide safer, more accessible, and more comfortable facilities for all ferry passengers.

Maynard was engaged to deliver comprehensive wayfinding solutions at four strategically significant wharves: Greenwich Point, South Mosman, Double Bay and Taronga Zoo.

Working collaboratively with Watpac, Architectus, and Transport for NSW, Maynard’s role was to ensure the signage and wayfinding design supported seamless, intuitive journeys for all users - including locals, commuters, and tourists alike.

This involved ensuring compliance with accessibility standards and TfNSW wayfinding guidelines, while also interpreting the identity of each location to create distinctive, place-sensitive solutions.
