Portsmouth Legible City

Portsmouth City Council commissioned Maynard to develop an integrated signage and mapping system that would work across a minimum of thirty wayfinding products in the city and the surrounding area. Detailed design standards were also produced so that the Council could update mapping panels.

Working in partnership with Atkins, we were briefed to develop a visual identity for the city’s wayfinding products that would accurately represent Portsmouth in terms of its heritage, character and culture. After a period of research and consultation with stakeholders, a colour scheme was carefully selected with high legibility and a genuine sense of the place.

We developed a comprehensive, city-wide wayfinding and information strategy, creating a distinctive visual identity and colour palette that captured the city’s character and atmosphere.

Detailed design standards were produced to enable the Council to update mapping panels throughout the contract term, ensuring the system remains accurate and relevant. Following extensive research and stakeholder consultation, the final colour scheme was chosen for its high legibility and its authentic reflection of the city’s sense of place.
