A lot of the graphic work we do here at Maynard involves designing pictograms.
Sometimes they can be more sedate in their style other times more far out. A particular artist that we like to reference for the playfulness of his work is Keith Haring whom’s artwork was mostly made up of dancing stickman style characters or what he affectionately referred to as ‘the radiant baby’.
Keith Haring was an American artist and social activist whose work expressed concepts of birth, death, sexuality and war. His imagery has become widely recognised across the globe by these characters, bold lines and use of vivid colours. There is something very picto-like about his artwork which is probably why we are drawn to his work. Despite the darker undertones of the artworks the graphics are always bright, colourful and fun.
His work was often seen on the street in the form of murals and subway art and he was part of the thriving arts community in New York which saw him work with the likes of Futura 2000, Kenny Scharf, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Warhol.
Below are some examples of his work and for more information on him visit his foundation website.BACK
