Public Realm Design - Maynard

Maynard’s approach focuses on human behaviour and the way people use and interact within cities and the public realm. They then use this thinking to develop smart strategies and intuitive design that reflects the changes in our evolving cities and towns.

We welcome the challenges of a public realm brief, knowing it demands careful problem solving and lateral thinking. Valuable wayfinding solutions and product placement within the public realm can only be created through an inclusive understanding of people and the environment they navigate.

Peterborough Legible System: Old Town heritage

In 2009, Peterborough City Council in conjunction with Opportunity Peterborough and LDA Design, delivered the first phase of Cathedral Square, the City’s regeneration project.

As part of this project a new city wayfinding scheme was developed, including concepts for the signage products.

Maynard redesigned the signage product range for the proposed wayfinding scheme. We provided rationalised concepts for both totem and fingerpost products whilst also creating a new mapping style to compliment the product design. Through value engineering we managed to dramatically reduce the manufacturing costs of the products, whilst also improving legibility, safety and future maintenance.

Portsmouth County Council: An integrated signage and mapping system

Portsmouth City Council commissioned Maynard to develop an integrated signage and mapping system that would work across a minimum of thirty wayfinding products in the City and the surrounding area.

Working in partnership with Atkins, we were briefed to develop a visual identity for the City’s wayfinding products that would accurately represent Portsmouth in terms of it’s heritage character and culture. After a period of research and consultation with stakeholders, a colour scheme was carefully selected with high legibility and a genuine sense of the place.

Detailed design standards were also produced so that the Council could update mapping panels as required throughout the term of the contract.

Loci Furniture Range: A fresh concept in street furniture, lighting and signage

Woodhouse design, manufacture and install street furniture, lighting and signage. Their Campus range of furniture is a cost effective, adaptable range of products for use in education and health environments.

We were asked to redefine and consolidate the existing Campus Range providing a new clear design direction for seating, shelters, cycle stands and litter bins. The range had to be economical, adaptable and robust with a strong personality.
