Church Chair Competition
Increasingly churches are replacing their traditional seating to create more flexible, multifunctional spaces in their churches. Recognising this trend, the Church of England identified the need for a different approach to its seating. The chair needs to work both aesthetically and functionally.
The chair features decorative cutouts that allow them to interlock with adjacent armrest seats. As well as providing a functional benefit, this symbolises the interconnected nature of the church community. Personal space is important, so the chair is generously scaled to ensure comfort.
Discreet storage integrated within the backrest accommodates books of up to 30mm thick, as well as Order of Service sheets of A4 and A5 size. A subtly narrowed top rail allows for easy access and means the seat back can double as a hand hold for elderly or less able parishioners.
