Of the many projects associated with the coming Olympic Games and their associated ‘Cultural Olympiad’, the one which has most immediately caught my attention is this: The Boat Project, a wooden sailboat with its hull built from wooden objects collected from members of the local community. This fantastic idea was enough to catch my imagination, but combined with its flawless execution it was breathtaking.

The boat, aptly christened Collective Spirit, was launched on the 7th of May, and has begun her maiden voyage, calling at ports around the South East starting with a spell in Brighton from the 19th-27th of May.

Simon Rogers’ refined contemporary 30’ daysailer hull acts as a perfect canvas for marquetry representing hundreds of meaningful objects from the people of the South East.
